Did Fletcher Win? • Yes. Fletcher's win is absolute. • He got his diamond star player. • He conducts a prodigious band at a state-of-the-art level competition. • And he obtained moral justification for all his wrongdoings. • The end justified the means. • But how did we get here? • muzika • The movie setup is simple enough. • Its antagonist, Fletcher is a perfectionist and a sadist. As such, he attracts self-centered masochists. • Enter Andrew, the kid who was told his whole life that men who don't accomplish much don't deserve love in their lives. Andrew grew up watching his father getting emasculated and ultimately left in the cold for his failures as a writer. • And this is exactly the type of information Fletcher fishes for. • In Andrew's subconscious, the absence of motherly love is a product of professional failure. Every bit of pain in his heart screams a single message: get better at your job. • Not all people have this reaction of course. A much more common reaction is that of the trombone guy. When stressed, he eats. I'm guessing many of you are the same way. I know I am. But Fletcher doesn't need the likes of some of us. He tests everyone's idiosyncracies and weaknesses and is extremely proficient at weaponizing them against you. • Tanner has another common problem. He can't play without the music sheet in front of him. So Fletcher steals the sheet and makes him confront the weakness. Either put in the extra practice, improve, and overcome. or.. You're out. • And That's just for those lucky enough to be considered talented. If he doesn't think highly of someone, for example, Ryan, he just uses them as a tool. • And this is the crux of what makes Fletcher a legendary character. • Subliminally, the movie asks you. Which one of your traits would Fletcher try to exploit? • It's a frightening thing to consider. Were you ever deeply wounded by a partner before? Would you physically crumble under intense practice? Can you handle the backstabbing when Fletcher eventually turns the band against you? Would you be willing to swallow everything the industry stands for these days? • I know I couldn't. In the internet's jargon, I'm just not built like that. • But eventually, after decades of emotional grinding, Fletcher finds a few individuals that just might cut it. • It's not a coincidence Fletcher focused on the one kid he found practicing alone in the wee hours. • And he rides them till the wheels fall off. • A crucial question I want to tackle is: does this kind of approach work in real life? Are there any examples of it, and how frequent is it? • Timestamps: • 0:00 - Intro • 3:19 - 1st Comparison: Castrati • 5:25 - 2nd Comparison: E-Sports • 9:49 - Extra
