Today I will summarize Romans chapter 7, where Paul explained how believers are united to Christ through His death, and where he explained how there is now a conflict of two natures inside the believer. Paul started by explaining the law. He said the law only has jurisdiction on someone who is alive. And he gave an example. He said … take for example marriage. A woman is bound to her husband while he is living. If she is joined to another man while he is living, the woman would be called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, and she is joined to another man, she is not called an adulteress. She is freed from the law because of someone’s death. • Paul said this was the same thing that happens to Christians. They die with Christ on the cross, and because they died, the law no longer has jurisdiction over them. Now a new law, the law of grace, applies because they were raised to life with Christ to bear fruit for God. Christians have been released from the law through death, and now they serve God in newness of the Holy Spirit. • Paul went on to say ‘so, in light of this, should the law be considered ‘sin’? Of course not. God gave the law. The Law is holy and good. It revealed and exposed people’s already existing sin. Would you know you were breaking God’s law if He did not tell you ‘you shall not covet’? No. But sin sprang to life when you found out what God’s law said. You were severely tempted to covet once you knew that was against God’s laws. Paul said all people were once alive apart from the law when they were children. But when the commandment came and they understood it, sin came alive in their heart and their spirit died. This commandment, which was to show the Holy ways of God, ultimately allowed sin and death to rule over mankind. So, the law is holy and the commandment is holy and good. • Paul then went on to explain what happens inside of a person once God makes them alive by grace through faith. He said ‘there is something I don’t understand completely. I want to do good, but my sinful flesh tries to stop me. I do not want to do wrong, but my sinful flesh tries to get me to do the very thing I hate. There is a war going on inside of me now, between the spirit and the flesh. Before I was a believer, I did not have this war happening inside of me. I was slave to my sinful flesh. I willingly obeyed its every command. But now, the war is fierce. Who will free me from this body of death? Fortunately, God will do so through Jesus Christ our Lord. • The most important verse in this chapter is Romans 7:4 which states, ‘Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.’ • The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that if a person spiritually died with Christ on the cross, the law has no jurisdiction over that person. God wants us to know that believers were once slaves to sin and could not perform any righteous acts at all from His perspective. But because of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, believers have been redeemed from that slavery. Now there are two natures at work in a believer, the sinful flesh and the redeemed spirit. And God wants us to know that we should war against our sinful flesh and defeat it daily until our last breath. • Do you feel the war that is going on inside of you? Or are you still enslaved to sin and obey its every desire, and are actually ok with that? Why don’t you call out to the Lord to save you? Repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation. He is offering you new life. Reach out your hand and take it. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross as your substitute, and the Father raised Jesus from the dead. God said if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. Why don’t you do that right now?
