First regular passenger service to Okehampton in 49 years 20th November 2021

In 1972 British Rail ceased operation of passenger services between Exeter • and Okehampton on the former southern route between Exeter/Plymouth • and North Cornwall. since 1972 only quarry traffic as been the regular stake • up to Meldon Quarry however since the arrival of the Dartmoor Railway this • traffic has been completely fassed out, although may be soon to make a • return as ballast shall be required for HS2 from a locality other than • Mountsorrel. • • In 1997 Devon County Council and then Wales and West trains began • operation of a summer sunday only Exeter - Okehampton shuttle, this • ending in the summer of 2019. • • Following the ending of the Dartmoor Railway in 2020, Network Rail have • accquired the track from Coleford Junction to Meldon Quarry (excluding • the remains of the once busy yard) and just over 1 year later have • managed mainly by the co-operation of local enthusiasts/council and GWR • have managed to re-open the line back to passenger service between • Exeter and Okehampton with the main goal of connecting Tavistock and • joining the now Gunislake Branch at Bere Alston to complete the former • Southern Railway mainline. • • ------------------------------ • Editing software: Bandicut (https://www.bandicut.com)
