Coloratura and fioritura. It is important to know the difference between the two classifications. Often singers call feats of fioritura examples of coloratura, this is wrong. The two often go hand in hand, but are not always together. • Coloratura - Extremes in range, that showcase the tessitura outside of the staff, usually above. • Fioritura - The ability to sing fluidly and with agility through quick melodic lines. This is seen usually in earlier music of Handel, Bach, Vivaldi and Rossini etc. less often with later composers such as Verdi. • In this video Cecilia Bartoli and Maria Callas are both singing, non si da follia maggiore from Rossinis, il turco in italia. These side by side clips demonstrate a marked difference of the fioritura. • Maria Callas is correctly singing fioritura whereas Cecilia Bartoli is not. • Maria Callas sings this aria musically and tastefully, the fioritura has a place, a sense of measure and timing, it enhances the melodic line and the emotional context of the aria. There is a beautiful sense of legato in Maria's singing, each note of the fioritura is given its value, the notes are also connected and sung with clarity and accent. There is a clear sense of an articulated, well balanced vowel. • Cecilia Bartoli sings this aria unmusically. This pseudo fioritura is wild and rushed through, it is aspirated noise, destroying the melodic and emotional context of the aria. Cecilia Bartolis version completely changes the music, at times you think she is singing a completely different aria from Callas. Each note Cecilia Bartoli sings is almost staccato like, with an accented punch in the sound making the overall performance choppy. There is no connection of notes, no sense of tasteful phrasing. There is no clarity, or balance in the vowels/or sound. • This performance is not worthy of Rossini's genius, it is a freak show of ugly noise. Unfortunately, this so called Rossini style is excepted and sung by many other so called opera singers. • What is a tremolo • TREMOLO What is a Tremolo?Explanation... • Please SUBSCRIBE and watch my other fascinating videos on the voice.
