In this live stream I cover everything I've learned about ASCII-art over the past 7 years of game dev for Stone Story RPG. Let me know in the comments if there are any questions.   / discord   • https://stonestoryrpg.com/ascii_tutor... • https://forums.tigsource.com/index.ph... (pages 28 29) • ASCII art, animation and western RPGs are some of my passions. In 2014 I decided to combine all those into a single project and Stone Story RPG was born. I have been developing the game since. It launched on Steam's Early Access in 2019, winning many awards in venues such as Tokyo Game Show, IGF, TIGA and IndieCade. • 0:00 Nagaraja Dissected • 5:00 Walk Cycle - Poison Adept • 5:59 Styles of text art • 11:10 Perspective question • 13:50 Fonts • 17:50 Alphabet of ASCII • 20:50 Let's draw! • 25:40 Lines Materials • 31:52 Anti-aliasing • 36:37 Depth Negative Space • 40:34 Let's draw, some more! • 47:21 Dithering • 49:22 Shadows • 52:36 Animation process • 1:01:12 Subtractive animation • 1:02:26 Conclusion • Gameplay involves action combat, boss fights, loot gathering, deep crafting, a rich world with NPCs and Lore, an artificial intelligence that controls your main character, and even some scripting with the game's built-in language, Stonescript, if you are so inclined to automate the game's grinding elements. I understand not all gamers are coders, but this is inspired by MMO's where some players will write bots to automate progression. Studios generally frown upon this, but instead of thinking of this as cheating, I ask what if this can be part of the game? . If all players have equal access to automation tools then it's fair. • I didn't expect the game to turn into an epic, but creative projects kind of have a mind of their own. The world design draws many inspirations from across pop-culture and games, such as Diablo, Mario, Dark Stalkers, India Jones (Temple of Doom), Prince of Persia 2, Candy Box, Dark Room, Clash Royale, Little Alchemy, Frog Fractions, Grim Fandango, Dota, Starcraft, D D, Alien, Poetic Edda, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Magic: the Gathering, the X-men comics, Snow White (Disney), Slay the Spire, Dante's Inferno, Zelda: Link to the Past... those are just the ones I can consciously pick out. • Work continues! We march towards exiting Early Access, as well as porting the game to the Switch, Mobile and perhaps some other consoles. Before you ask, no, the game does not run in the terminal, unfortunately. It was built on top of the Unity engine, leveraging not only modern technology but game design principles as well. Every feature is carefully considered and balanced to maximize player engagement and fun. I am not opposed to scripted tutorials in games, but in Stone Story I demonstrate that they are not necessary. Games are great at teaching players how to play. Turns out, learning is fun, when structured correctly. Games-- are all about learning.
