Did you know that the old London Underground trains used to have comfy armchairs and even a restaurant? 😲 Back in the early 1900s, the tube was all about luxury. The Metropolitan Railway was in fierce competition with the Great Central Railway, and they went all out to attract passengers. • The Metropolitan Line had some seriously long journeys between Liverpool Street and Aylesbury, taking up to 90 minutes one way. To make these trips more comfortable, they commissioned The Pullman Company to create two amazing carriages named Mayflower and Galatea. These coaches were decked out with soft carpets, wood panelling, decorative lamps, and super comfy armchairs. They even had a bar and a restaurant! • For an extra charge, passengers could enjoy a proper sit-down meal while traveling. But, sadly, this luxurious service ended with the outbreak of the Second World War. • Fun fact: the only other time carpet was used in a tube carriage was in 1974 on a Piccadilly line train. But, with all the pollution in the tunnels and the typical London weather, it didn’t work out too well. So, they went back to wooden floors. • #london #underground #history
