Lesson on the purine and pyrimidine degradation pathway, the critical enzymes involved in the pathway (xanthine oxidase) and what the body does with the products of pyrimidine catabolism (beta alanine and beta aminoisobutyrate) and purine catabolism (uric acid). • In this lesson, I describe each step of purine destruction to uric acid, explaining each explaining why accumulation of uric acid can cause disease and what treatments are possible to treat high levels of uric acid and gout.
