(1 Feb 1998) English/Nat • • Hundreds of people took to the streets of Northern Ireland on Sunday to remember those killed on Bloody Sunday. • • Fourteen people died when British troops fired on Catholic demonstrators on the 30th of January, 1972. • • Relatives and friends of those killed welcomed the decision, announced last week, by the British government to order a new inquiry into the killings. • • Hundreds of people took to the streets of Londonderry, in Northern Ireland, on Sunday. • • For 26 years, Catholics have remembered the incident known as Bloody Sunday in which 14 people were killed after British troops opened fire on a protest march. • • But this year's remembrance ceremonies were different. • • Last week, after much lobbying, British Prime Minister Tony Blair ordered a new inquiry into the events which led to the killings on the 30th of January, 1972. • • For nearly three decades many Catholics have maintained that British paratroopers fired first on the unarmed crowd. • • But, a previous inquiry had exonerated the troops, saying they had merely responded to gunfire from the demonstrators. • • Representatives from Sinn Fein, the political wing of the I-R-A, were among those who participated in Sunday's march. • • But even though they have won a new investigation, they have vowed to continue their push for justice. • • At a press conference held at the Trinity Hotel, Sinn Fein official Martin McGuinness, said he wanted to see prosecutions result from the new judicial inquiry. • • SOUNDBITE: (English) • And I certainly do believe, given all that's happened over the last 30 years, that if people such as General Ford and others are found to be complicit in the killings on that day then I think that they should be subjected to proceedings in the court. • SUPER CAPTION: Martin McGuinness, Sinn Fein M-P • • Earlier in the day, in heavy rain, relatives and friends of the dead laid wreaths at the Bloody Sunday memorial in the Catholic Bogside district of Londonderry. • • Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork • Twitter: / ap_archive • Facebook: / aparchives • Instagram: / apnews • • • You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
