On March 29, 1998, 11 captive-reared Mexican gray wolves (Canis lupus baileyi) were released to the wild for the first time in the Blue Range Recovery Area of Arizona and New Mexico. Missing from the landscape for more than 30 years, the howl of the rarest and most unique subspecies of gray wolf, was once again greeted by the mountains of the southwest. This March, marks the 16th anniversary of this historic event, a significant milestone for the lobo and wildlife conservation. • Mexican gray wolf F810 is among the dozen captive lobos residing that the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC) in South Salem, NY. • The WCC participates in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) and Recovery Plan for the Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi). The Mexican gray wolf is the rarest mammals in North America; the species at one time was completely extinct in the wild. Presently, there are approximately 400 Mexican gray wolves remaining in the world, the majority living in captivity within the network of facilities participating in the SSP. • To learn more about #loboweek, please visit http://bit.ly/1dEQdUC • If you want to watch Mexican wolves in live time, visit our live Mexican gray wolf webcams at http://nywolf.org/wolf-cam/ If you see something cool, let us know! • For more information about these wolves and the Wolf Conservation Center's efforts to recover them, please visit our website at www.nywolf.org and follow us on facebook (  / nywolforg  ) and twitter (  / nywolforg  )
