Annual Buddhist Temple Events and Celebrations in Thailand temples shared from chapters of our book (A Potato in a Rice Field) http://amzn.to/2gDQxRc. This Buddhist temple is called Wat Mai ReRai Thong Temple found in rural Thanon Hak (Broken Road) in Nang Rong, Buriram in the Isaan region of Northeastern Thailand. The events include, in order: • Aerial drone videos of a temple alms offering to Buddhist monks during Ok Phansa and the end of Thailand's lent. The next ceremony is a mass monk ordination when 100+ monks ordained through two days including the head shaving ceremony, an ordination parade, then finally the ceremony at the ordination hall of the temple. • Then it is a temple festival, which is a bit like a fundraiser for the temple, with Rum Wong circle dance stage, Muay Thai boxing and Ligay classical theatre which runs through the night. • Next is Songkran, the Thai New Year and well-known water festival, which takes place at the temple with prayers and offerings to the Buddhist monks. This then ends with the pouring of fragranced water over the Buddhist statues of the temple along with the hands and feet of the monks living on temple grounds. • The final ceremony is called the Big Candle Festival marks two significant Buddhist holy days in Thailand, one is Asanha Bucha, a full moon celebration, and the other is Wan Khao Phansa, which is a bit like the Buddhist Lent. The occasion, therefore, marks the start of a three month period in which the monks are not allowed to leave temple grounds, and many lay followers will also give up some vice throughout the same period, like meat or alcohol.
