“Against all Odds“ • A SymPodium on Body Thought Movements • August 5, 2021 • 20.30 H • TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA @ Muffathalle • In a parcours of dance, performative, artistic, theoretical as well as personal contributions – live and digitally – artists and theorists who have accompanied TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA over the past 30 years reflect for one evening on the possibilities of dance and choreography, but also on forms of living together in the future. How can we – against all odds – continue to dance or dance against the circumstances? • Dance is one of the most vibrant art forms existing. It has the power to overcome boundaries, to fight resistance, to break new ground. Choreographic practices also imply countless possibilities to incorporate other disciplines, formats, approaches, and media. The pandemic has put the whole world, especially the performing arts, in a kind of shock paralysis. All the aspects that make up dance – immediacy, liveness, interaction, proximity – were forbidden, could not take place. In the context of its 30th anniversary, TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA has been trying to celebrate dance in all its facets, but also ask how, after more than a year of pandemic and „cultural distancing“, we can use dance as an art form to take a stand on aspects that are relevant to our coexistence. At the same time, a panopticon has been created of the groundwork that TANZWERKSTATT EUROPA has done during its 30 years of existence, and of how artists have radically changed and continue to change the way we think about dance. It looks back and forward. • „How to continue dancing (against)?“ was the key question posed to theorists, scientists and artists. The reactions to this were presented as artistic, theoretical or personal contributions, live or in the media. The Viennese artist Nikolaus Gansterer transforms the contributions live and visually in the format of a translecture performance. Gansterer builds dynamic „sculptures“ that are inspired by the lectures, filmed live and screened. His translecture performances visualise and transform „thought movements“ into art.
