It is very important in Japan to hold your chopsticks correctly. Learn how to properly hold and use chopsticks here. • More about chopsticks and Japan can be found at http://gaijinsurvivalguide.com/ • The Gaijin Survival Guide host starts explaining that one of the best ways to act like the Japanese is to properly use chopsticks, the preferred Japanese utensil. He then states that he will show the proper way to hold and eat with chopsticks. • First, one chopstick is inserted into the wedge between the thumb and the pointer finger, close to the larger end of the stick. Further down, the chopstick rests on the ring finger. Pressure from the thumb will keep it in place. The next chopstick is then placed between the end of the thumb and pointer finger, and is supported by the middle finger. The thumb stays still and holds both of the chopsticks in place while the pointer and middle fingers move back and forth in order for the chopstick to grasp an object. • The host states that it will likely take time and effort to get the finger muscles practiced in the movement, but that it is one of the best ways to gain the respect of the the Japanese. He relates an experience when his Japanese supervisor was impressed with his wife’s handling of chopsticks, even though she had never been to Japan before. • To wrap up, he explains that chopstick usage is not simply confined to the very act of eating, and that there is such a thing as chopstick etiquette and good manners with your chopsticks while eating, and that the next Gaijin Survival Guide video will explain proper chopstick etiquette. • A blooper finishes off the movie.
