Chalus Cycling Iran’s MOST DANGEROUS Road ⚠️

Day 98. 67km (63524kms) • With some trepidation I set about climbing 3000m up Iran’s most dangerous road. I didn’t bother stocking up with food; I’m already laden with so many gifts of fruit and I know the scenic road to be lined with restaurants. • After an initially sketchy start which saw me negotiating a bizarre rural flight of stairs I found my way across the new highway to the old Chalus road. Despite timing my trip midweek to avoid the worst of the traffic I was alarmed at how busy it was; the new toll road’s price is too high I suppose. But the climb was gentle enough that I scarcely noticed the first 1000 or so metres. Multiple stall-owners called me over for tea and cookies, (so good I ended up buying 2 packs) as I left behind Iran’s lush north coast. • But u-turning cars and a traffic jam confirmed the rumour I’d heard that the road was to be closed these next 3 days. To my great relief, and as predicted by my hosts in Chalus, I was allowed through. Through to a gloriously empty and beautiful winding mountain road! I couldn’t believe my luck! • Having overlooked eating fish on the coast I was enjoying a tasty fried something 🐠 when suddenly the traffic returned! The road had reopened! From here I had to carefully negotiate a constant stream of slow-moving, sometimes stationary traffic up into the clouds until my legs, and daylight, allowed no more. Flat space is in short supply in the Alborz mountains so there is no lodging after 30 or so kms from the coast. Consequently a little shy of my 2000m altitude target I found a stretch of restaurants and hung about looking suitably pathetic and sweaty until (and it doesn’t take long in Iran) I was called over and offered a place to sleep in the prayer room of a 24 hour restaurant. Even at what is effectively a motorway services the food was still superb; barbecue lamb ribs (or were they chops?) and olives in the delicious walnut paste. With Gibbo safely parked out back, I tucked myself in on a thin mattress on the floor, day one of Chalus complete 👍🏼 • If you enjoy my vlogs, blogs, and photogs please consider joining me on Patreon 😃 • https://www.patreon.com/helsonwheels?... • #iran #cycling #travelvlog
