But I long to rise in the arms of faith

The hymn I Am Thine, O Lord is one of the many beautiful collaborations between Fanny Crosby and composer William Doane. Written in 1874, it emerged from a time of deep spiritual conversation between the two friends at Doane’s home in Cincinnati. One evening, as Crosby and Doane discussed the intimate presence of God in their lives, Crosby’s heart was profoundly moved. Later, as she reflected in her room, the words of this hymn began to flow into her mind. By morning, she shared the verses with Doane, who promptly composed the accompanying melody. • The hymn's message is anchored in Hebrews 10:22: “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.” Through this verse, Crosby emphasizes spiritual cleansing, drawing on both the purity symbolized by “water” and the sacrificial significance of “bleeding side.” This vivid imagery aligns with Hebrews 10:19-21, where believers are encouraged to enter God’s presence boldly through Jesus’ blood and the “new and living way” opened by His sacrifice. • The hymn is written from a personal perspective, reflecting Crosby’s deep relationship with Christ. The opening stanza expresses a profound surrender, “I am thine, O Lord,” and an earnest plea to “be closer drawn” to Him. This nearness is both a comfort and a call to service, as the second stanza petitions, “Consecrate me now to thy service, Lord, by the power of grace divine.” • Prayer becomes the cornerstone of her closeness to God in stanza three, where she describes communing with Him “as friend with friend.” The final stanza envisions ultimate fulfillment of this relationship in heaven, a “rest in peace” only reached after “cross[ing] the narrow sea.” • At the heart of the hymn lies the refrain, “Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, to thy precious bleeding side.” Here, Crosby captures the essence of the hymn's theology: it is through the cleansing and sacrificial love of Christ’s blood that believers are drawn into a perfected, closer relationship with their Savior. I Am Thine, O Lord remains a testimony of personal faith and the longing for deeper intimacy with Christ, echoing Crosby’s lifelong devotion to her Redeemer. • Draw me nearer • I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, • And it told Thy love to me; • But I long to rise in the arms of faith, • And be closer drawn to Thee. • Refrain: • Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, • To the cross where Thou hast died; • Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, • To Thy precious, bleeding side. • Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord, • By the pow’r of grace divine; • Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, • And my will be lost in Thine. [Refrain] • Oh, the pure delight of a single hour • That before Thy throne I spend, • When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God, • I commune as friend with friend! [Refrain] • There are depths of love that I cannot know • Till I cross the narrow sea; • There are heights of joy that I may not reach • Till I rest in peace with Thee.
