Palliative sedation is the monitored use of medications intended to relieve refractory suffering. A more comprehensive approach about its effects and potential adverse events is needed. • The ATLANTES Research Group of the Institute for Culture and Society at the University of Navarra has published a systematic review and an integrative review regarding palliative sedation. The first one aims to explore clinical aspects of palliative sedation in recent prospective studies. The second one aims to understand how the potential effects and possible adverse events of palliative sedation in Palliative Care patients are measured. • The research papers in open access: • ‘Clinical aspects of palliative sedation in prospective studies. A systematic review’ by Maria Arantzamendi, Alazne Belar, Sheila Payne, Maaike Rijpstra, Nancy Preston, Johan Menten, Michael Van der Elst, Lukas Radbruch, Jeroen Hasselaar, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, 2020 Sep 19; S0885-3924(20) 30754-5 • https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jpainsymman... • ‘How to measure the effects and potential adverse events of palliative sedation? An integrative review’ by Belar A, Arantzamendi M, Payne S, Rijpstra M, Hasselaar J, Radbruch L, Vanderelst M, Ling J, Centeno C. First published online Palliative Medicine 14 December 2020. • https://doi.org/10.1177/0269216320974264 • These papers are framed on a five year project (2019-2023) called ‘Palliative Sedation’ – The use of proportional palliative sedation for the relief of refractory symptoms”. It's funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 funding stream and aims to investigate the use of palliative sedation in several European countries: • https://palliativesedation.eu/
