Psychosis stems from the word psychotic. Hypersexuality is a symptom of bipolar disorder psychosis for 25 to 80% of those affected, it is more common in women. Yes, I have experienced psychosis and hypersexuality. Yes, I have had sex with a lot of people because of this. I am not making excuses for my behavior, I am stating the facts of the disease and the syptoms that come along with it. I have been unfaithful to my husband. For years I spent my life praying that I would never have another episode, fighting and fearing the fact that I had to take medication. This fear stemed from nearly dying from medications prescribed to me at a young age. I spent years blaming myself and feeling guilty for the things I did when I was psychotic, it wasn't untill 4 years ago, through counseling that I learned, things we do when we are psychotic are not our fault. Our brains are not working properly, we are delusional, sometimes have hallucinations and we are not in control. Bipolar disorder and many other mental illnesses, while there is no cure can be managed with medication and psychosis can be completely avoided. It is not an easy process to find the right medication for you but it is detrimental to your life to find a medication and take it. We can live a perfectly normal life if we take medication for the brain disorder we have. Hypersexuality is absolutely not a choice, it is a part of a psychotic episode and/or mania it is not tied to ones personality. It is about control and it is only managable if you treat the underlying problem psychosis. Medication is absolutely necessary for someone with a severe mental illness. Without psychosis or mania there is no hypersexuality, if we take our medication we can prohibit extremely life threatening and dangerous situations in our life. We are gambling with our life and freedom if we decline to take medication but taking medication is a process to find the right one so please be patient.
