This tank was designed in the late 1950s and early 1960s as part of a program to develop tanks with powerful guns to confront heavy Soviet tanks. • The FV4005's main armament is a 183 mm Popper Mark II gun, one of the largest guns used on a tank. This gun can fire a shell weighing about 40 kilograms, making it capable of destroying targets protected by large thicknesses of armor. Designed primarily to support direct attacks against heavy targets, the FV4005 has no role in modern tactical battles due to its bulkiness and poor protection against modern anti-tank weapons. • Although very effective as a heavy gun, the FV4005 was in limited production and was not widely used in actual combat.
