The CSUSB Department of Theatre Arts announces its 2024-25 season, featuring a blend of classic and contemporary productions, and prepares for the grand opening of the new Performing Arts Center in 2025. • Starting on Nov. 15 is William Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Kristi Papailler, assistant professor of theatre arts. This enchanting play follows the adventures of four young lovers, a group of amateur actors, and the fairy kingdom. As Duke Theseus prepares to marry Hippolyta, Hermia and Lysander flee to the woods to escape Hermia's arranged marriage to Demetrius. Pursued by Demetrius and Helena, they get caught up in the magical mischief of the fairy king and queen, Oberon and Titania, and their playful servant, Puck. Meanwhile, a troupe of actors rehearses for the Duke’s wedding, adding to the comedy. Performances will run from Nov. 15-24. • Next, from Dec. 6-8, Professor Johanna Smith and her team of puppeteers present Mariposa / Butterfly by Sandra Fenichel Asher and Jose Casas. This family-friendly show tells the story of two neighbors in Texas, separated by a fence and cultural differences. Initially at odds, they begin to connect through the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly, discovering the beauty of nature can unite them. • Closing the season is You Don’t Even Speak Spanish! a Chicano farce by Aaron Higareda, directed by Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez, assistant professor of theatre arts. The play follows Jorge Ramirez, a first-generation Chicano college student, as he tries to find his voice amidst family expectations and societal pressures. When he falls for Citlalli in his Aztec dance class, his life takes a surprising turn. The play features traditional Aztec dance and will be performed from April 25-May 4. The premiere on April 25 will include a discussion with the playwright about the themes of the play. • Tickets will go on sale on Sept. 30. Prices are $6 for students and those under 17, $12 for faculty, staff, seniors, and military/first responders, and $15 for adults. Performances will be held in the Ronald E. Barnes Theatre.
