Hailey Jackson performs as Tituba in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. These two scenes book end themselves in the beginning and the end of the play and are the only two times Tituba is seen in the story. • Leading up to the first scene, Abigail's cousin has fallen into a comma and caused the entire village of Salem to break into distress worried about witchcraft and foul play. Abigail, played by Jemma Gunderson, who is truly responsible, tries to get the eyes off her by blaming her family's slave, Tituba. • Tituba, was a really woman in Salem and believed to be one of the first accused to be a witch during the trials, and the first to plead guilty at threat of death. The character and real woman was Bajan and Native American. In an attempt to stay true to the character, I chose to perform with a Bajan accent at risk of being called politically incorrect among other things. After a long talk with my director I knew Tituba deserved to have her story told regardless of the fact that I was white. If I had a play written about my life, I would never care that the actress looked like me. I'm sorry if you are offended by this, but I'll never be sorry I played her. Tituba taught me so much as a human being and stretched me as an actor to new lengths. I was honored to get to portray such an incredible role. At the end of the day we as actors are story tellers, and I believe everyone deserves to have their story told.
