The Rs 100 commemorative coin was issued to mark the Birth Centenary of Kalaignar M Karunanidhi. The coin was released on August 18, 2024, and the proof coin set was issued by the India Government Mint, Hyderabad. • Muthuvel Karunanidhi (3 June 1924 – 7 August 2018) was a prominent Indian writer and politician, known for his significant contributions to both fields. He served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for nearly two decades, spanning five terms from 1969 to 2011. Affectionately referred to as Kalaignar (Artist) and Mutthamizh Arignar (Tamil Scholar), he earned these titles due to his remarkable contributions to Tamil literature. Karunanidhi's tenure as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was the longest in the state's history. • The metal composition of the Rs 100 coin consists of a quaternary alloy, including 50% silver, 40% copper, 5% nickel, and 5% zinc. Weighing 35 grams and measuring 44 mm in diameter, the coin also features 200 serrations along its edge. • The obverse depicts the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar at the center, with the legend “सत्यमेव जयते” inscribed below. The words “भारत” and “INDIA” appear on the right and left periphery, respectively, with the rupee symbol “₹” and the denomination “100” placed below the Ashoka Lion Capital. • On the reverse, the coin features the portrait of Kalaignar M Karunanidhi at the center, with his signature below the image. On the left periphery of the coin, the inscription कलैञर मु.करुणानिधि की जन्म शताब्दी written in Devanagari script, and the inscription Birth Centenary of Kalaignar M Karunanidhi in English depicted on the right periphery of the coin. The year “1924-2024” in international numerals written on the bottom periphery of the coin. • The proof set was priced at ₹4,470 by the Hyderabad Mint.
