King Balak of Moab tried to hire Balaam the “prophet” from Mesopotamia to curse Israel. In his encounters with God, Balaam came to really see Yahweh’s support of Israel and could not curse Israel. This led to a classic clash of motivation and theology as Balak pressed harder and Balaam responded in kind.
