Windflowers, for solo piano, by Enoch Tsang. • March 2020. • Audio: midi (via MuseScore3) • === • At the beginning of quarantine, spring was beginning to emerge. Nature was on my mind, as walks along the river and in the forest had kept me busy. It was cool seeing the transition from winter to spring, especially noticing plants beginning to bloom. In particular, there were many flowers along my path, and their petals would gently flutter in the breeze. In this piece, i had a couple things i wanted to try out: • 1) rhythm - i wanted to focus on creating an unbalanced rhythmic identity. what i mean is, establishing one pulse and immediately juxtaposing it with both an alternate rhythm AND an interuption in the phrase. This was to try and emulate a feeling of swaying back and forth, much like a flower on a breezy day. (It wasn't quite this literal, but the overall goal was to say here, it feels like 3/4...or does it?) • 2) lead-ins - something i hadn't done much in the past was writing in phrases or ideas that introduce the next idea, or prepare for a change in key/texture/colour. (there is a really lovely example of a lead-in that Stravinsky wrote in his Piano Sonata in F-Sharp minor, first mvt). • I hope you enjoy :) • === • Instagram: / composer.enoch • SoundCloud: / composerenoch
