So you want to be a urologist. Urology is the specialty of medicine that focuses on issues related to the urogenital tract, which includes the kidneys, bladder, prostate, and more. It’s also the specialty that deals with sensitive issues like sexual function, fertility, and gender identity. • To become a urologist, you must complete four years of medical school, followed by a five or six-year residency program. Five-year programs are mostly clinical, whereas the six-year program has a dedicated research year. • In terms of competitiveness, urology is pretty competitive, ranking seventh in the list of the most competitive specialties according to our data-backed competitiveness index. • The average urologist earns approximately $506,000 per year and works around 56 hours a week. • If you enjoy procedural work that will have an immediate and positive effect on your patients, urology may be the field for you. • That being said, urology can be extremely demanding, and there are many conditions that require immediate care. This means you’ll be called in during the middle of the night. Urologists also have some of the highest burnout rates among all medical fields. • Do you want to become a urologist?
