Hello Nestflix viewers! • We hope you enjoy this unique glimpse into the lives of one of Southern Africa's most critically endangered bird species, the Southern Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus meridionalis), of which fewer than 400 remain. Our livestream is broadcast Monday through Friday, 08:00-17:00 (GMT+2), from Molati-Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO a World heritage Site in Southern Africa • Over the next few days, the livestream may present some challenging content. The behaviour we'll be observing might appear quite harsh. Personally, I find it difficult to watch and feel conflicted about it. It's natural for us to feel deeply saddened by the situation. • Understanding 'Cainism' • But we must remember that this behaviour is an evolutionary adaptation that has developed over thousands of years to ensure the survival of the fittest individuals. This process occurs across many species in nature. While nature can be extremely brutal at times, it serves a purpose. Nature prioritizes the survival of the species over the individual. • Laying two eggs does not guarantee that both chicks will hatch and survive to adulthood; the second egg is merely an insurance policy. In fact, only one chick will inevitably survive. In large raptors, including bearded vultures, a phenomenon known as 'cainism' - a reference to the biblical story of Cain and Abel - often occurs, where the older, stronger chick kills or outcompetes its younger sibling to eliminate competition for resources. This could be considered a micro-level tragedy, particularly for a critically endangered bird species with fewer than 400 individuals remaining. However, on a macroevolutionary scale, this behaviour increases the likelihood of the surviving chick thriving and reaching adulthood, thereby ensuring the continuation of the species. • https://www.birdontheedge.org. •   / indlovu-aerial-trust   • Please note that from time to time, there may be a pause in the livestream due to technical issues encountered by our telecommunications carrier. We will work with them to get the stream back online as soon as possible. The YouTube livestream may also not be available on Saturdays and Sundays due to YouTube restrictions on enabling an encoder livestream from a mobile device. During these periods, please visit the direct broadcast on our website at the following link: https://www.birdontheedge.org/nestcam... • For more information and to connect with us, visit the project website at https://www.birdontheedge.org. • Thank you.
