While lead-based paint was banned for residential use in 1978, much of today’s housing was built before 1978 and may contain lead-based paint. 2017 Census Bureau data indicates that over 57% of occupied homes in the U.S. were built prior to 1978. • Lead is a toxic metal that is harmful if inhaled or swallowed.
