Today, October 6, is the birthday of Dennis Neil Johnson, Sr. He died alongside his wife of 44 years in the 2017 Sutherland Springs church shooting. Dennis was a church elder, an American Legion volunteer, and a Navy veteran who served as a Seabee in Operation Desert Shield. He and his wife left behind 6 adult children and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. • • His family members fondly recall his sweet tooth, his love for Levi Garrett chewing tobacco, and his soft spot for anyone struggling through life and looking for a way forward. He and his wife were very religious, but never holier-than-thou. Dennis’ arms were covered with tattoos. After he settled down to family life, he kept the tattoos but had bikinis added to cover the naked women. Dennis’ daughter was sure of one thing: Dennis and his wife would have forgiven the man who killed them. • • According to his youngest daughter, “He was not an eloquent person. He was not an educated person. He was comically uneducated sometimes. But he was so smart, he was wise, and he had the best stories and the best advice.” As family members expressed in their interview with The Dallas Morning news, people learned about Dennis and Sara Johnson because of how they died, but their hope is that they will be remembered for how they lived. • • On that Sunday morning, 27 innocent people died and 27 more were injured by gunfire because a known violent domestic abuser fell through the cracks of the background check system and was allowed to buy guns and ammunition. • #banassaultweaponsnow • #remembertheirnames • #reasonablegunreforms
