High speed recording of antagonistic interactions between desert kangaroo rat (Dipodomys deserti). The animals are free-ranging in their natural desert habitat at night, and filmed with high speed cameras using near-IR lights invisible to mammals. The video is recorded at 500 frames per second, and playback is slowed down about 30 times. This clip shows a typical antagonistic encounter between two kangaroo rats, wherein they use their powerful jumps and mid-air kicks to fight over resources and territories. Desert kangaroo rats are highly territorial and readily defend their burrows, food caches, and resources from invaders. This is an example of how the highly evolved evasive jumping and kicking used to avoid predators is also apparently used in territorial interactions. The PVC pipe device in the experiment is used as an experimental setup testing reaction time (Freymiller et al. 2017, https://doi.org/10.1093/biolinnean/bl.... • Scientific details of this study are published in Freymiller et al (2019, doi 10.1093/biolinnean/blz027).
