The Allaire Historic Village’s earliest recorded history of industrial activity was in the early 1750s. In 1822, philanthropist James Peter Allaire purchased the property, and named it the Howell Works. During the next 10-15 years, he intensively developed the site, residential houses and industrial buildings. The site soon developed into a big community of 400-500 residents. The Howell Works produced casting and pig iron which were shipped to Allaire’s foundry in New York for building steamship engines and boilers. • In addition to iron, the principal items produced were ‘hollowware’ which was a generic term given to cast iron products such as cauldrons, pots, kettles, and bakeware. Other items, such as pipes, stoves, sash weights, and door and window lintels, were also cast on the site. We interpret the year 1836, because it was the most prosperous year in Allaire village and America at the time. In 1837, America would suffer an economic depression. The once active community fell into decline. The fire in the furnace was extinguished in 1848. • Today the site remains as a memorial to the social thought, experience, and planning of Industrial Era America. There are 13 of the original buildings for you to explore and experience life in the 19th century. A living history museum, Allaire Historic Village brings the past alive through reenactments and interpretive programs. Allaire’s historical interpreters, blacksmiths, carpenters, and tinsmiths are all volunteers from the local community dedicated to preserving the village as an educational resource for schools of NJ, community groups and the public at large. • Use headphones for better experience. • 00:00 Intro • 00:55 Blacksmith shop • 03:18 General store • 07:03 Carpentry shop • 09:44 Enameling building • 11:46 Blast furnace • --------------------------- • 4K video hiking urban exploration of ghost towns and historic, abandoned, and haunted places in NJ and PA. • Allaire Historic Village | Abandoned Allaire Ghost Town, NJ exploration. • Please don't vandalize ghost towns, historical and abandoned houses!
