Polar bears are the largest bears in the world and are the greatest predator in the Arctic. They spend half of their time hunting for food. Because the amount of sea ice is reducing, polar bears are being found in increasing numbers in human-inhabited areas. • They can run at a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour and are avid swimmers, managing speeds in the water of nearly 10 kph.
