The COLOMBIA Disaster • The space shuttle Columbia broke apart on February 1, 2003, while re-entering the Earth's atmosphere, killing all seven crew members. The disaster occurred over Texas, and only minutes before Columbia was scheduled to land at the Kennedy Space Center. An investigation later determined the catastrophe was caused by a piece of foam insulation that broke off the shuttle's propellant tank and damaged the edge of the shuttle's left wing. The Columbia disaster was the second tragedy in the history of the space shuttle program, after the space shuttle Challenger broke apart shortly after launch in 1986 and all seven astronauts on board perished. • The crew members of STS-107 were selected in July 2000 The mission was commanded by Rick D. Husband, who was a colonel in the U.S. Air Force and a test pilot. He has previously flown on STS-96. The mission's pilot was William C. McCool, a U.S. Navy commander who was on his first spaceflight. The payload commander was Michael P. Anderson, a U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel who had previously flown on STS-89. Kalpana Chawla, served as the flight engineer; she had previously flown on STS-87. David M. Brown and Laurel Blair Salton Clark, both U.S. Navy captains, flew as the mission specialists on their first spaceflights. Ilan Ramon, a colonel in the Israeli Air Force and the first Israeli astronaut, flew as a payload specialist. • • If you think this video helped improve your knowledge, don't forget to smash the like button and subscribe the channel.π • •The Challenger Disasterπππππππ • • Story of the Challenger Space Shuttle... • #colombia • #colombiasos • #spaceshuttle • #spacex • #shuttle • #spaceshuttle • #kalpanachawla • #crewinspace • #spacefacts • #universe • #short • #shorts • #disaster • #crash
