While exercising we are constantly told, “keep the spine neutral and rigid” but the truth is you need to MOVE it. With the regular cat camel we are more globally moving our spine and not paying close attention to where we lack mobility and control. • • This exercise will expose it all. Do segmental cat cows instead. 2-3 X back and forth daily is great place to start. • This video is sped up x 2.5. It is slow, controlled and I am focusing on breathe throughout. • • GOAL: move one vertebrae at a time moving through flexion and extension. • • BENEFITS (which really all go together): • 1. Improved mobility / joint ranges of motion. If you don’t use it, you will loose it. • 2. Learn to distribute force evenly through your spine instead of compensate = injury reduction. An example I’ve mentioned on my page before - if you have limited spinal extension, your shoulder blades cannot move efficiently on rib cage. This could be the cause of your shoulder pain. • 3. Joint health, longevity and decreased discomfort or pain. Areas around of spine often have poor blood supply. Move it to bring nutrients to the joint. Think about it as greasing the grooves! • 4. Improve motor control and proprioceptive awareness. When you are performing any exercise you should understand proper spinal and pelvic position. For example, when squatting you need be aware of when your spine might be extending or rounding. • 5. Bring neural connectivity to each of the 24 vertebrae instead of just moving where you already can with no thought. There are so many important cues to run through with this exercise to get the most out of it. Highly recommend hiring a coach who can help walk you through this, determine where your control is lacking, and help you restore function with other exercises.
