Adjustment can be made to the hinges piston of the seat to control how fast or soft the seat will come down. Sometimes the dampening grease will need to be replaced to restore the soft close ability of a toilet seat. The soft close feature of a toilet seat usually occurs with wear and tear due to age so i generally prefer to replace a toilet seat as it is very cheap and easy to do it yourself.
