A peripheral nervous system is further subdivided into the somatic and autonomic divisions; the latter of which can either be sympathetic (fight or freight response) or the parasympathetic (rest and relax response). • On gross inspection, nerves can be perceived as solitary, solid, white bands. But when looked under a microscope, we can see that each nerve fiber is actually composed of a large number of axons whose cell bodies reside in central or peripheral ganglia, the spinal cord or the brain. • On the full version of this video, we will be covering the following points: • overview of the anatomy and histology of peripheral nerves; • longitudinal section of a peripheral nerve; • cross-section of a peripheral nerve; • blood supply and innervation of peripheral nerves; • clinical notes associated to peripheral nerves: peripheral neuropathy. • Want to test your knowledge on the histology of the peripheral nerves?
