Anilines are prepared through the nitration of aromatic rings with HNO3 (nitric acid) and another acid, often H2SO4 (sulfuric acid). The nitro group can be reduced in many different ways. One method is catalytic hydrogenation, but hydrogenations can also reduce halides from a ring. Milder conditions include reduction with iron in acetic acid and reaction with stannous chloride (SnCl2) in ethanol. All of these are common, effective methods for preparing anilines from nitro benzenes.
