For Bono, ‘Miracle Drug’ celebrates the combination of love, science, and faith as forces that transform lives. The song was inspired by the faith of a mother who had complications during childbirth, and her son, Christopher Nolan, was left without oxygen to the brain for two hours, resulting in cerebral palsy and paraplegia. For ten years, she didn’t know if her son was a conscious being. Then, a drug emerged that allowed science to set him free. Neither the hospital, nor the doctors, nor the nurses could guarantee that he was aware of the world.
