Mah jongg is the 4-player Chinese tile game that took America by storm in the 1920s. Tile efficiency for American mah jongg is a complex topic. I generally see 2 strategies, Maximum Usage and Targeted onset. Maximum Usage is where a player selects a category or hand that uses the most of their tiles regardless of multiples. Targeted Onset is where a player identifies multiples then gathers the rest of the tiles in their hand to support them. When they run out of discards, they whittle down their category or pick a hand.
