From one misadventure to the next, Pinocchio finds himself on a coach ride to Pleasure Island, a haven for ruffians, miscreants, loafers and layabouts, where kids can cause noise, break things, drink beer, smoke cigars, eat candy and play games to their hearts' content, all without ever having to go to school or do a lick of work. • There, Pinocchio befriends Lampwick, a young lad with a devil may care attitude who is happy to take Pinocchio under his wing and show him how to have a good time. • After some time on the island, Pinocchio's beleaguered cricket conscience Jiminy, catches up with the boys in a near-deserted billiards hall. He quarrels with Lampwick and tries fruitlessly to get Pinocchio to wise up, but ultimately storms away, ready to be quit of his responsibility and Pleasure Island. • However, in his search for a way off the island, he stumbles upon a frightful scene. Crates of braying donkeys, ready to be shipped off for arduous labors. And in the middle of it, more donkeys, dressed in boys' clothes. Some can even talk, despairing over their fates. With a shock and a start, Jiminy realizes the truth-- the children of the island have been turned into donkeys! • Back in the billiards hall, Lampwick grumbles about Pinocchio's cricket conscience. Sipping a tankard of beer, he makes a cheeky remark, chiding Jiminy's worrying, for thinking something was going to happen to them. As soon as the words leave his lips, his ears undergo an incredible alteration, shooting up into long tips coated in velvety brown fur. • Witnessing all of this, Pinocchio is dumbstruck, looking in disbelief from his donkey-eared friend to the tankard in his own hand, setting the latter aside. • Seeming oblivious to the sudden stretch of his ears, Lampwick stoops over the billiards table, hoisting his hips as he prepares to take his next shot. He crudely dismisses Jiminy's role as a conscience and makes his move. The instant his cue stick strikes the ball, a bump forms in the seat of his patchy trousers, rapidly lengthening and ripping a small hole in the fabric as his newly-sprouted donkey tail shoots out, covered in brown fur and dark, tasseled tip. • Again, Pinocchio is speechless, giving his cigar an incredulous stare before flicking it away, hoping it will dispel the sight before him. • Undeterred, Lampwick wanders around the table, his donkey ears and long tail continuing to go unnoticed. With another grumble at Jiminy's expense, the young redhead lines up one last shot. Soon, his red hair is overtaken by a fine brown fur and black mane, poking out like a mohawk beneath his feathered cap. As he grabs his cigar and inhales deeply, he plays right into the hands of dramatic irony wondering playfully, _What's he think I look like? A jackass?_ • He turns to face Pinocchio with a big, equine grin, asking and answering his own question in one twisted punchline. His ears are now matched with a fur-covered face, neatly framing his eyes above where his nose and mouth now merge together, pushing out in a short donkey muzzle, with wide nostrils and prominent teeth. • Unable to resist, Pinocchio breaks into a giggling fit, laughing at his friend's bizarre visage, and answering that he sure does look like a jackass. However, his revelry is soon sidetracked by a loud bray erupting from his throat. As he covers his mouth in shock, it's now Lampwick's turn to be amused, giggling until he too emits a powerful bray, throwing his full body into the sound. Finally, he realizes something is amiss. • Feeling at his new features, Lampwick soon rushes to a nearby mirror, wailing at the sight of his shocking reflection. He runs around the hall like a chicken with its head cut off, pleading for help that never comes. Grabbing to Pinocchio, he begs his friend to do something, just as his hands morph into hooves and he drops to all fours, his yells melting away into donkey brays. • As the Lampwick--now an agitated donkey--wrecks the billiards hall, Pinocchio starts to feel his own ears change, flipping out into gray-furred appendages. As he grasps them in shock, he turns, wondering what to do as he feels his own tail poke out from the seat of his own overalls, tasseled and gray, just like his ears. Will Jiminy be too late? • There we have it, the classic. A harrowing lesson in the dangers of idleness and reckless living for most.
