SolarScape is a speculative research project by MVRDV NEXT, MVRDV’s research and development unit for new experimental technologies. The project investigates the possibilities of a shift from absolute constraints in public building policies to performative environmental simulations, enabled by technological innovations such as digital twins, urban data collection, and more advanced simulations. Using a “voxelised” version of virtual city models and environmental daylight simulations, it proposes a computational methodology that visualises the impact of public policy on future urban developments.
