But these seemingly unchanging structures are actually part of a dynamic cycle, constantly being transformed from one type to another. • There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Each type forms through a unique process: • Igneous Rocks: These rocks are born from fire. When molten rock, called magma or lava, cools and solidifies, it forms igneous rocks. Granite and basalt are common examples. • Sedimentary Rocks: These rocks are formed from the accumulation of sediments, such as sand, mud, and organic matter. Over time, these sediments are compressed and cemented together to create sedimentary rocks like sandstone and limestone. • Metamorphic Rocks: When igneous or sedimentary rocks are subjected to extreme heat and pressure deep within the Earth's crust, they can undergo a transformation. This process, called metamorphism, creates new rocks with different properties. Marble, for example, is a metamorphic rock formed from limestone. • The rock cycle is a continuous process where one type of rock can be transformed into another. For instance, an igneous rock can be eroded and weathered to form sediments, which can then become sedimentary rock. If this sedimentary rock is later subjected to intense heat and pressure, it can metamorphose into a new rock type. • The Earth's geological history is written in the rocks, providing clues about the planet's past. By studying the different types of rocks and their formation processes, geologists can learn about the Earth's age, its internal structure, and the events that have shaped its surface over billions of years.
