At age eleven, Shi Cheng Chuan became one of the 115 million people in China with hearing loss — a major barrier to learning, and social mobility. Determined to change that, Cheng Chuan sought ways to give hearing-impaired the ability to learn again. A deep interest in AI technology in university was the key. Today, his AI powered speech-to-text app Voibook is used in nearly 100 special education schools in China. • • DBS saw the potential good that Voibook could do, providing a DBS Foundation grant in 2020 to overcome challenges brought on by the pandemic.
