‘El Sol Te Llama’ (The sun is calling you) video was shot in Aldea Nova Esperanza, territorio Yawanawa, Rio Gregorio, Acre, Brazil. In the ‘Samauma’ tree, the tallest tree of the forest. In honor of its magnificent spirit, ‘gracias infinitas’. • Sitting with Maná, Isku’s uncle, I was able to learn about all the challenges that he and his community has gone through over the years, since he was a little boy. Just like many other indigenous communities all around the world, they’ve been fighting for their rights, their land, their traditions, their unity as a whole and their language. They have a big mission, and one of the most important is not to let the Yawanawa language disappear. There are 1300 Yawanawas approx. 100 speak the language intermediate level and there are only 32 fluent speakers. Most of the population can understand some of the language but can’t speak it. As Isku said: ‘If we lose our language, we lose everything. We’ll become the parrot people, just repeating what is left, not knowing what truly means’. As a call to action to rescue the Yawanawa language among the new generation and the ones yet to come, Isku has created ‘Children of the Rainforest’ school in his village. This school/organization empowers Indigenous communities on the frontline of rainforest preservation. Their mission is to help the Yawanawa save their language and protect 500,000 acres of pristine Amazon rainforest.
