Born in Little Italy, Grillo started his criminal career with robberies and hijackings, amassing an extensive police record by the early 1970s. After serving time in prison for hijacking, Grillo was recruited by Roy Demeo and became close to Henry Borelli and Dominick Montiglio, operating out of the Gemini Lounge. • Known for his capabilities, Grillo was not fond of the practices common in the Demeo crew. He played a role in the rubout of Mickey Spillane and was the main man in the take out of Ruby Stein in May 1977. Despite his reputation, Grillo's life spiraled out of control due to heavy drinking, dope and a gambling addiction. His participation in high-stakes card games run by Genovese heavyweight Matty the Horse led to massive debts, with Grillo losing $250k in one sitting. • After being warned to stop gambling, Grillo defied orders and lost another $110k just weeks later. Facing heat from law enforcement and increasingly unreliable, the Demeo crew feared he might flip if arrested. On November 14, 1978, Grillo was called to the Gemini Lounge by Roy Demeo. Sensing his impending fate, Grillo left his wallet and watch at home before meeting Demeo, Chris Rosenberg, and the Gemini Twins. He took it in the head and was cleaned up in the apartment behind the lounge, ending his life at the age of 44.
