Many babies that undergo fetal surgery for spina bifida are born prematurely and may require immediate access to expert postnatal care. http://www.chop.edu/spinabifida • When planning delivery after fetal surgery for spina bifida, the goal is to get the pregnancy to 37 weeks’ gestation and then deliver the baby by cesarean section. Experts from the Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia coordinate delivery at CHOP’s Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit (SDU) to ensure seamless care after fetal surgery for spina bifida. The SDU was designed specifically for mothers carrying babies with a known birth defect. • The baby is first introduced to the parents and family, and then brought to CHOP's Newborn/Infant Intensive Care Unit (N/IICU) for assessment and monitoring following delivery after fetal surgery. At Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, babies delivered after fetal surgery for spina bifida have immediate access to all of the expert subspecialists they may need.
