정동진이라는 지명은 조선시대에 한양의 경복궁 정(正)동쪽에 있는 바닷가라는 뜻에서 유래하였다. • 우리나라 동해안 곳곳에는 해발고도가 다른 여러 단의 해안단구가 발달해 있다. 특히 금진에서 안인에 이르는 정동진 일대에는 해발 70~90m 지점에 폭 800m가 넘는 전형적인 해안단구가 나타난다. 정동진 해안단구에는 저위면(20m) · 중위면(40m) · 고위면(90m) · 고고위 Ⅱ면(110m) · 고고위 Ⅰ면(140m) 등 모두 5개의 단구면(段丘面)이 나타나는데, 최근 연구에 의하면 해발 160m에서도 단구면이 발견되었다고 한다. • 이들 단구면은 대개 두꺼운 퇴적층으로 덮여 있다. 그리고 해발고도가 낮은 단구면은 보존이 양호하고 자갈을 비롯한 퇴적물이 신선하나 고도가 높은 단구면은 보존이 불량하고 퇴적물이 심하게 풍화된 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 차이는 해안단구의 발달시기를 반영하는 것이다. • 정동진 해안단구는 지반의 간헐적인 융기(隆起)로 형성된 것이 아니다. 해수면(海水面)이 높았던 간빙기(間氷期)에 형성된 해안의 평탄면(平坦面)은 빙기(氷期)에 해수면이 낮아지면 단구(段丘)로 변한다. 느리지만 지반이 계속 융기하는 경우, 새로운 간빙기가 다가와 해수면이 과거의 수준으로 재상승해도 시간이 경과한 만큼의 융기로 인해 그것은 계속 단구로 남게 되는 것이다. 정동진 해안단구도 이와 같은 과정을 반복하면서 형성되었다. 정동진 해안단구는 2004년 4월 9일 천연기념물로 지정되었다. • The name Jeongdongjin comes from the meaning of the seaside located to the east of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Hanyang during the Joseon Dynasty. • There are many coastal terraces with different elevations along the east coast of Korea. In particular, typical coastal terraces with a width of over 800 m appear at 70~90 m above sea level in the Jeongdongjin area from Geumjin to Anin. There are five terraces in total in the Jeongdongjin coastal terraces: low-level terrace (20 m), mid-level terrace (40 m), high-level terrace (90 m), high-level terrace II terrace (110 m), and high-level terrace I terrace (140 m). According to recent research, a terrace has been found at 160 m above sea level. • These terraces are usually covered with thick sedimentary layers. And the terraces at low elevations are well preserved and contain fresh sediments including gravel, but the terraces at high elevations are poorly preserved and contain severely weathered sediments. This difference reflects the development period of the coastal terraces. The Jeongdongjin coastal terraces were not formed by intermittent uplift of the ground. The flat coastal surface formed during the interglacial period when the sea level was high turns into terraces when the sea level drops during the glacial period. If the ground continues to uplift slowly, even when a new interglacial period approaches and the sea level rises to its previous level, it will remain as a terrace due to the uplift that has occurred over time. The Jeongdongjin coastal terraces were also formed by repeating this process.
