There are over 4000 known caves in Virginia. Almost all are privately owned. The Caverns at Natural Bridge is located deep inside Buck Hill, near Natural Bridge Station in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Rockbridge County, Virginia. At over 300 feet below the surface, this is reported to be the deepest commercialized show cave in the eastern U.S. This is a living cave, meaning that it continues to be formed and shaped by geological forces. There is water in the cave, resulting in many mineral deposits; however, this cave was largely formed by fissures created by earthquakes millions of years ago. Many rooms and passages are completely dry. A man made tunnel allows visitors easy access. • Only about 40% of the cave is included in the public tour.
