I did the reaction in a 600mL beaker. I charged it with 250mL of 95-97% sulfuric acid and while stirring I added slowly 149.5g of powdered potassium nitrate. After everything dissolved and the mixture cooled to 36°C I started adding the 100g of my crude nitrobromobenzene mixture. The addition is exothermic - go slow. After I added everything I kept stirring the mixture for three hours at a temperature from 75-95°C (most of the time (2h) 90-95°C). The work up was almost identical to the Sciencemadness procedure but I used 96% ethanol for the crystallization instead of methanol and the product oiled-out.
