How often to condition leather? • What kind of leather do you have? • 99% of leather is either Chrome or Vegetable Tanned. Sometimes you need to clean them differently. To become a respected and knowledgeable leather buyer, like to know the difference between Full Grain and Genuine Leather, read our Leather Buyer’s Guide written for 5th Graders here. • Chrome Tanned Leather thrives on neglect and only needs to be conditioned every 12 months. It is used to make 95% of leather shoes and boots, leather jackets and leather couches and also 99.9% of all car seats. 95% of tanneries tan leather with the mineral, Chromium, which makes it very corrosion resistant and so really hot or cold temperatures don’t affect it much either. • Vegetable Tanned Leather doesn’t like water or extreme heat and needs to be conditioned every 3 to 6 months. It’s used to make almost all gun holsters, horse saddles, belts, knife sheaths and all of the leather soles of shoes. It is usually kind of stiff. Some people use veg to make backpacks and briefcases. Vegetable Tanned Leather will last just as long as Chrome Tanned leather, if you take care of it. • For more leather cleaning tips check out https://saddlebackleather.com/how-to-...
