In 1968, at the height of the Cold War, a Soviet nuclear submarine, K-129, sank in the Pacific Ocean. For the Soviets, it was a human and military tragedy: a crew of 98 lost—along with a full complement of ballistic missiles. For the US, it was an opportunity to acquire a treasure trove of military and cryptologic secrets. The CIA sets out to find it in 1974 using a specially constructed vessel, the USNS Glomar Explorer (T-AG-193), financed by Howard Hughes. The codename for the operation was Project AZORIAN. • In this episode of SPY's Collection Highlights, historian and author, H. Keith Melton showcases one of the last remaining objects from the K-129 submarine, the control panel! • ----------------------------------------------------------------------- • Spy Museum's upcoming VIRTUAL programs: https://bit.ly/3b8QZ0P • Follow us: • Facebook: / intlspymuseum • Twitter: / intlspymuseum • Instagram: / spymuseum • SpyCast: https://audioboom.com/channel/spycast
