Slavery is a term that most of us assign to past centuries, but it exists in a different form today. In 2023, it is estimated that 41,000 people in Australia were held in conditions of modern slavery. That includes all relationships based on exploitation - including using coercion, violence, threats, abusive power and deception to manipulate and control a person's freedom. • In this video, UniSA anti-slavery researcher Dr Nerida Chazal discusses modern slavery as a hidden crime that is capturing the attention of the Federal Government, which is on the verge of appointing the country's first Anti-Slavery Commissioner. • Friday August 23 is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. It also marks the launch of a new book co-authored by Dr Chazal and Kyla Raby titled Modern Slavery in Australia and a panel discussion about modern slavery.
