When the full moon phase of the lunar cycle coincides with the perigee, or when it is closest to the Earth, a supermoon occurs. Supermoons are larger and appear brighter than typical full moons. NASA estimates a 14 percent apparent size increase, or roughly the difference between a nickel and a quarter. • Typically, supermoons appear every three to four months. This one will be the second in August of this year and the third overall. Contrarily, blue moons only occur every two to three years, which is why they are referred to as once in a blue moon events. Even more rare, blue supermoons only appear about every 10 years.
